Welcome to the learning management system for the Mindbody Wellness course that leads to the 66-hour BWYQ Level 3 Technical Specialist in Adapting and Developing Mindbody Exercises for Older Adults qualification. Thank you so much for enrolling on this course which is the pilot course for the new Level 3 qualification. Mindbody Wellness Training was set up as a new company to pilot all four of the new qualifications. We thank you for your patience as the awarding organisation BWYQ and the tutors and assessors at the new BWYQ-recognised centre Mindbody Wellness set up the course and the processes for the first time. Your feedback is vitally important as we test new processes, such as this Learning Management System (LMS). Things may need to change as we test new systems and ‘iron out any wrinkles’, but hopefully by the end of this pilot course, we will have a user-friendly LMS that has been informed by your feedback.
This course is divided into two units:
- the theory or knowledge unit (Unit 1) and
- the practical unit (Unit 2) when the learners will be working face-to-face with the tutor either in-person or on Zoom.
For those of you who are keen to proceed as soon as possible (and seriously you could get Unit 1 done in the 4 -6 weeks prior to the 7th February start date for the practical sessions, if you want to wait until after Christmas!), we now have some Unit 1 assignments live on the learning management system. This starts with information you will need about older adults, what happens to their bodies as they age and how exercise and physical activity can be beneficial (1.1) It then moves on to defining and identifying the scope of Mindbody Exercises for Older Adults and how the exercises can be adapted and developed (1.2) and then goes on to how to be professional as a specialist teacher for older adults, to liaise with other professionals and to create a marketing plan for your eventual classes (1.3).
Assessments:
As a BWYQ-recognised centre, we are working in tandem with the awarding organisation BWYQ (which also has a WordPress site with the same plug-ins to establish an electronic workbook) using Tincanny and WPforms Pro plug-ins that work with our secure password-protected Mindbody Wellness website which is an affordable WordPress website that we created and maintain ourselves as volunteers. Our tech support team is either WordPress for the whole of the website or the tech support team for any of the plug-ins we use like Learndash, WPforms Pro, Tincanny, Ameila booking and approved payment systems like Stripe and Square.
The formative assessment for Unit 1 knowledge is done via SCORM-compliant videos with interactive videos and the Tincanny plug-in allows us to see when you have watched the whole video and if you have a Pass (at least 70% correct) or not. You can do this process as many times as you want, either to complete with a 70-100% Pass rate or for a review of your knowledge.
For summative assessment, we take the BWYQ ubiquitous workbook questions they have created for any recognised centre to use and we put those electronic forms into our own LMS at Mindbody Wellness. There are many advantages to using a web-based LMS and WPforms Pro for the written answers you provide for summative assessment. The main advantage is that WPforms Pro aims to be a universal platform that works with whatever operating system ‘the user’ uses, whether that’s Windows, or an Apple device or an Android phone. (Non-compatible devices have been a major problem in the past for some assessors/learners.) Secondary benefits include entry and storage on the encrypted, password-protected secure website (rather than filling up an assesor’s in-box and individual filing system on their own device), automatic transfer to a centre’s dropbox or google drive account plus the forms can link to the credit card payment systems Stripe and Square when leaners pay for a course through the form.
References:
Ofqual has set the knowledge and skills descriptors for Level 3 attainment – see p. 2 of the course syllabus and p. 3 of the qualification specification below.
The awarding organisation BWYQ has specified that in order for Level 3 written work to meet Level 3 attainment, the learners must:
“Include citations/references and clearly identify anything that is a direct quotation”. This assessment grid explains what meets or exceeds standards and what does not: BWYQ Level 3 General Assessment Descriptors
The first assignment 1.1.1 for adapting and developing mindbody exercises for active older adults shows that learners need to identify their references as they complete each part of the assignment in the knowledge unit. This sets an example for the the rest of the Unit 1 assignments. If any source has been omitted, a learner can include a compilation at the end of the final assignment for Unit 1 since the Assessment Summary sheet is for the whole of Unit 1.
